Private Joseph Wallace Carter (Service No:N383391) enlisted in the ACMF on 12 June 1945 and was attached to 17 Battalion VDC when he was Discharged on 30 September 1945. Older brother Cecil (Service No:15335) served in WWI and younger brother Irwin (Service No:V1364) served in WWII.

Born in 1898 in Melbourne Victoria, Joseph was the third of five children of Edwin Burnett Carter (b1870 in Majorca, Central Goldfields, Victoria) and Bessie Wallace (b1867 in Echuca, Victoria). Edwin (a Butcher) and Bessie married in Melbourne in1895 and settled in Korrumburra in Gippsland, Victoria where Edwin was a Butcher before moving to Melbourne in the 1920s.

Joseph was a Butcher in Melbourne in 1925 when he married Louisa Ann Anderson (b1901 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following Louisa's death in 1932, Joseph remarried in 1936 to Edna Elaine Cooper (b1905 in St Arnaud, Victoria). In 1935 Joseph and Edna were in Coolamon NSW where Joseph was a Master Butcher and Baker until the early 1950's when the couple returned to Melbourne. In 1954 Joseph and Elaine settled in Geelong Victoria. Joseph died in 1970 and Edna in 1985.
