Date unknown: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, On 25th April, 1915, and subsequently during operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula, for exhibiting on many occasions the greatest courage and coolness in carrying messages, helping wounded, and bringing up food and water under heavy fire.' Date unknown: Honoured Military Medal, 'Near STRAZEELE on 15th June, 1918, Private MERRIN was one of a daylight raiding party of one officer and five other ranks under Lieut. MADDOX. The party were being sniped at from a group of posts and Private MERRIN rushed one of the enemy and forced him to surrender. Singlehanded he immediately captured the remaining two men of the post and brought them back to our lines under heavy fire.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 23 Date: 12 February 1919

The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published 2017, refer to pages 105+6, & 272. Prior to the war he was a painter of South Melbourne Vic. He enlisted 17th Aug 1914 aged 21 years. He served with the 5th Infantry Battalion, While in this service he was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal and a Military Medal. He survived the war and was discharged 15th Aug 1919.
