ALLEN Thomas Kingsley Russell MB BS
1897-1973
Thomas Kingsley Russell Allen was born in Glen Thompson, Victoria 23rd July 1897. He was the son of Thomas Allen and Jane Evaline, nee Scott. He was educated at State School, Wesley College. After he finished school, he became a station hand, and then volunteered for the first AIF, on 28th August 1916. He was posted to the 22nd Reinforcements for 6 Bn as a Private. He arrived overseas on 19th April 1917 and went on to France on 11th May 1917. He was gassed, in March 1918, and was transferred 1st Southampton General Hospital. It is recorded in his military records that he had two charges for being absent without leave while overseas. He was discharged from the AIF on 13th May 1919. Allen studied medicine at Queen’s College, Melbourne University after WW1, graduating in 1924. He went into general practice in Meredith, VIC until August 1925, when he was appointed as an RMO to the RGH, Caulfield, VIC. This was followed by RMO to RGH, Greenslopes QLD and then as senior medical officer and medical superintendent at RGH, Daw Park, SA, in June 1935. Allen married Elizabeth Marion Sylvia Hill, in Victoria, in 1924. She was the daughter of James Fred Hill and Edith Louise, nee Seal.
Allen joined the CMF in December 1936 and was promoted to major, on 1st July 1938. Allen volunteered for overseas service with the 2/AIF in 1941, at which time he again gave his permanent address as the Repatriation Hospital, Keswick. He named his wife as next of kin and her address also as the Repatriation Hospital, Keswick. He served briefly with 8 Field Hygiene Unit and transferred to 101 AGH on 19th January 1942. However, he remained on the Reserve of Officers to be called up for duty as required.
After WW2, Allen continued to work for the SA Branch of the Repatriation Department until he retired in 1962. He was a member of numerous clubs and associations, including the United Service Club, Brisbane, life member of the Old Wesley Collegians Association and foundation member of the Queensland Diggers’ Association. Thomas Kingsley Russell died on 24th October 1973 and was interred at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia.
