CLAUDE ARCHIBALD RADLEY

Claude Archibald (Archie) Radley was born in Roebourne West Australia in 1897.
Archie was the youngest child of Thomas and Catherine Radley, nee Kilgallon. His father was a constable in the West Australian Colonial Police in Roebourne at the time of his birth.

Archie enlisted in the A.I.F. on 13th September 1916 in the West Australian 44th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, along with his cousin John Michael Kilgallon. (Archie's cousin was shot in the head on 12th December 1917 and survived) Archie gives his occupation as a Horse Driver, single, aged 19 and living at Lion Mill Hotel, Perth. His rank was private.

Archie along with his cousin John Michael Kilgallon embarked from Fremantle on H.M.A.S. A34 PERSIC on 29th December 1916, and disembarked Devonport England on 3rd March 1917.He arrived in France from Southampton on the 10th September 1917. Archie was a signaller. He was killed by shell fire along with 2 other soldiers during the YPRES operation on Friday 5th October 1917. Archie is buried in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery Plot X111, Row C, Grave No. 12.

Archie was greatly missed by his family. For years afterwards a memorial was placed in the Perth paper on the anniversary of his death. His mother Catherine planted a tree in honour of his memory in Kings Park Perth. Sadly no known photo exists of him. Archie was the cousin of my Grand Mother, Rhoda Mary Jeffs, nee Radley.

"LION MILL.

Lion Mill has always been proud of the large number of their brave men who have gone forward at the call of King and country, many of them never to return. The sad news came through last week that Pte. Archie Radley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Radley, of the Lion Mill Hotel, had been killed in action in France. Pte. Radley was only 20 years of age, and was a smart, promising young fellow, and made many friends. Much sympathy is expressed for his parents and brother..." - from the Midland Junction Swan Express 23 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)
