Biography contributed by Troy Phillips
Joseph Alfred (Alf) Phillips was born on 14 Dec 1888 at Waterloo in South Australia, second son of James Richard Phillips (1863-1949) and Mary Ann nee Jeffrey (1858-1945).
Alf enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 30 Nov 1914 to serve with the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment in the First World War, Service Number: 9400. They departed Adelaide on 2 Jun 1914 aboard HMAT Botanist, and arrived in Gallipoli on 11 Sep 2015.
Alf was wounded in action by a bullet to the right elbow, leaving it permanently limp and painful. He had multiple hospital admissions during 1915 (including diphtheria infection which contributed to his later death) and was invalided to Australia in 1916. After more treatment on the return trip and in Adelaide, Alf was discharged with good character in 1 Nov 1916.
Alf died age 36 on 20 Mar 1924 from Pulmonary Tuberculosis (exacerbated by the diphtheria contracted during service) after time spent in the Hindmarsh Ward of Consumptive House, North Terrace, Adelaide.
