Royston was the fifth of six children of James Hallinan (b1870 in Lake Town via Geelong, Victoria) and Louisa (Gina) Georgina Searby (b1877 in Geelong, Victoria. James - a Labourer - and Gina married in 1911 in Geelong, Victoria. By 1917 the family had moved to Wollongong, NSW and James enlisted with the AIF (Private; Service No:56982). James and Gina settled in Wollongong  where James worked as a Labourer.

Royston worked as an Electrician in Wollongong, and in 1939 married Clarice May Richards (b1914 in Wollongong, NSW) - Clarice was a Shop Assistant. In June 1943 Royston enlisted with the ACMF and was a Lance Bombardier (Service No:N468260) attached to 12 VDC when he was Discharged in November 1945. Brother Alfred (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:79524) served with the RAAF in WWII.

Royston and Clarice remained in Wollongong, where Royston worked as an Electician and a Fitter. Clarice died in 1997.
