Born Ellen McKENNA 22 July 1889 at Shepparton, Vic.
Daughter of Dr. Jeremiah McKENNA and Elizabeth nee O'CALLAGAN of Emort Rd, East Malvern, Victoria

Nellie trained for 3 years at Melbourne Children's Hospital before enlisting in June 1915.  Embarking in July 1915 per 'Orsova' she served in Convalescent depot, Harefield Park, London & England & Special reinforcements in England & France and returned to Australia in June 1918 with her appointment terminated 25 November 1918.

Re-enlisted in February 1919 she embarked 26 February 1919 from Melbourne per Hospital Ship ‘Karoola’.

Nellie resigned her appointment abroad 20 August 1919 due to marriage to Dr. Henry George LEAHY.  She was widowed in 1940 and eventually died 28th May 1977 at St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England.
