At 9PM on 2nd August 1879, John McCreadie Snr of 8 Allison Street, Newton (County of Ayr, Scotland) was killed less than one month after the birth of his only son. The location and cause of death were recorded as “On board No. 1 tug boat Ayr Harbour” and “Crushed to death under the lever of an engine” respectively. The Scottish Census, taken on Sunday, 3rd April 1881, records Margaret McCreadie (30) and children Jane (7), Isabella (4) and John (1) resident at 8 Allison Street, Newton. The children's dates of birth were Jane (b. 28 Oct 1873, Newton), Isabella (b. 05 May 1876, Newton) and John (b. 03 Jul 1879, Newton). During 1882, the family emigrated to Australia where, Jane married Alexander Adie Wills in Queensland in 1895 and Isabella married Albert Ernest Wyatt also in Queensland in 1899. At Townsville, Queensland on 14th February 1916, John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), joined the 15th Battalion and died of wounds on 10 July 1917.
