Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Younger of the two brothers (Paul and Matt) who served in WWII, Private Matthew Charles Williams (Service No:N207159) served in the ACMF with 11th (NSW) Battalion VDC from 22 October 1941 to 23 February 1944 - Part Time Duty (PTD).

Matt was born in Harden via Murrumburrah, New South Wales in 1921, youngest of four children of Allan Paul Williams Snr (b1889 in Gundagai, New South Wales) and Ellen (Nellie) Josephine Shaw (b1886 in Tumut, New South Wales). Allan and Nellie married in 1911 in Tumut, and lived there, in Harden via Murrumburrah and Werris Creek via Tamworth before settling in Sydney - Allan worked for the Railways, and from the 1930s was a Locomotive Inspector.

Matt was in his fifth year as an Apprentice Fitter and Turner with Clyde Engineering Works Granville in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1945 in Sydney he married Jean Australia Shaw (b1924 in Sydney, New South Wales) - the couple settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Matt worked as a Toolmaker and Engineer/Fitter and Turner with the Postmaster General's Department. In the 1970s Matt and Jean moved to Woy Woy (Matt was a Fitter and Turner with the Postmaster General's Department). Matt died in 1984 and Jean in 2017.
