John William Farrar trained at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Medicine Degree in July 1914. With the outbreak of World War I, he served as a Medical Officer with the RAN on the hospital ship HMAS Grantala for three months, and then, in response to an appeal from Lord Kitchener for doctors to assist with the English war effort, went to England and France where he served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C) from March 1915 to March 1916. Returning to Australia he enlisted with the Australian Army Medical Corps on 22nd June 1916, serving as a Captain and then Major in England and France. He returned to Australia on 27th April 1919.
