Alex was the fourth of ten children of George E Hardie (b1871 in Scotland) and Joan Rankin Kitching (b1879 in Scotland). Jessie immigrated to Maryborough QLD in 1882 with her parents and siblings on board the Shenir and George arrived in Adelaide, South Australia with his parents and siblings in 1879 on board the Oaklands. George (a Miner) and Joan married in 1899 in Howard, Wide Bay, QLD and settled in Ipswich where they raised their family. George worked as an Engine Driver.

Alex started work as a Steel Moulder in Ipswich, QLD where he married Lillian Doreen Edwards (b1907 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1925. By 1929 the family had moved to Newcastle NSW where Alex was a Steel Moulder when he enlisted in the ACMF in April 1942. He served as a Private (Service No:N154070) attached to 5 Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in September 1945.

Alex and Lillian remained in Newcastle where Alex worked as a Steel Moulder. He died in 1991 and Lillian in 1992.
