Served in both world wars

Charles was my grandfather. He served in France for the NZ corps in WW1, then enlisting at Yass in 1942 at the age of 48. He was a volunteer and never left Australian shores for WW2 service.
His NZ Army medical record shows many illnesses from the conditions and gas that impacted him during WW1. He was a sapper, and later made an ambulance driver when he could no longer walk well, due to gangrene of the foot, losing a toe or two.
Between wars he was a marine engineer and worked on the relay cable on Norfolk Island, where he met and married Alice Butler my grandmother in 1931. My Dad Bruce was born on the island in 1932.
Charles died in Gosford NSW in 1969 at the age of 76.
