Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Donald Norman MacLEOD and Charlotte Harriet nee BUSSELL, Talisker, Williams, Western Australia

Mr. Hugh Vernon MacLeod, a well-known Western district pastoralist and a former member of the Legislative Council, who died on Saturday, aged 73, will be buried at Portland Cemetery this afternoon.  Mr. MacLeod, who was a member of an old pastoral family with interests in Victoria, Western Australia, and Queensland, was educated at the Brighton Grammar School.  He trained and raced many horses, including 60 winners.  In his younger days he was a champion amateur rider.  He was first elected as Independent member of the Western Provice of the Legislative Council in 1946.  A strong supporter of Mr. T.T. Hollway, former Premier, he stood as a V.L.P. candidate at the June elections this year, but was defeated.   Mr. MacLeod is survived by his wife Elsa, who before her marriage starred in several J.C. Williamson productions.  The funeral at Portland Cemetery will be preceded by a service at St. Stephen's Church of England, at 4 p.m.  Mr. Bolte, Premier last night paid a tribute to Mr. MacLeod's service to the State.
