Herbert was the youngest five children of Henry Powley (b1854 in Norfolk, England) and Sarah Ann Hicks (b1864 in Orange, NSW). Henry was an Agricultural Labourer in 1877 when he arrived in Sydney, NSW on board the Corona. Henry (a Farmer) and Sarah married in 1887 in Orange, NSW where they settled and raised their family.
Herbert was a Farmer and Carrier in 1928 when he married Maude (Maudie) Victoria Gander (b1910 in Orange, NSW). The couple settled at Spring Terrace and in 1942 Herbert enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:N351108) attached to 26 Battalion VDC when he was Discharged in September 1945.
By the mid 1950s Herbert and Maudie had moved to Orange NSW where Herbert was a Storekeeper. He died in 1959 and Maudie in 1978.
