Eugene William Diggelman
EUGENE WILLIAM DIGGELMAN (1895-1960) born at Horsham VIC, son of August John and Louisa Fredrika Wilhelmina Diggelman nee Eltze. Eugene was working as a farmer at Ardlethan when he enlisted to serve in WW1 at Victoria Barracks on March 1st, 1916. Private 5563 was sent firstly to the 46th Battalion Depot Coy., at Cootamundra and then embarked from Sydney on the HMAT A14 Euripedes. And arrived in Plymouth on June 26th. After further training in England he was sent to Etaples in France on board the Golden Eagle on December 13th and was taken on strength on January 23rd, 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on November 28th, 1917. He was badly wounded in the knee on August 10th, 1918 – for which he was forced to claim benefits for in 1960. He was returned to Sydney on the Orsova during March 3rd-May 1st, 1919 when he was discharged as medically unfit.
