From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery.
Another Forgotten Digger of The Great War not resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.
57 years ago today, on the 6th March 1964, Private Frederick William Picken, 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-1737), farmer from Tyalgum, Murwillumbah, New South Wales and Wyong?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. ANGLICAN 3-213. 28.
Born at Oldcastle, Meath, Ireland about 1889 to Edward and Fanny Pickens of Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland, Frederick enlisted July 1915 with the 31st Battalion at Brisbane, Queensland.
Admitted to hospital 9.12.1918 (scrotal cellulitis), Frederick returned home May 1919, being discharged on the 26th July 1919.
I have not located Mr Picken’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
There is no headstone to tell us of Frederick’s service with the 1st A.I.F., so January 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on this Forgotten Digger’s gravesite in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.
I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore honour and dignity to Mr Picken.
Many thanks to Leesa Putan for the notification.
Lest We Forget.
