Cornelius Alexander Floyd was born in 1894 and his father Charles Clifton Floyd passed away when he was six years of age and his mother Mary Floyd died when he was ten years old. It is not known how he was raised.
His two younger brothers both died during the war, 4013 Pte. Cecil Francis Floyd 31st Battalion AIF was killed at Polygon Wood, Belgium 26 September 1917, aged 20 and 5018 Pte. Charles Floyd 52nd Battalion AIF was killed in action six months later, on 27 March 1918, aged 21.
Cornelius served at Gallipoli from May 1915 and was severely wounded during January 1917, gunshot wounds to his left arm and a compound fracture which forced his evacuation to England. He was returned to Australia due to the injuries to his elbow on 27 July 1917.
