Andrew was the second of five children of Michael John Hennessey (b1881 in Wollongong, NSW) and Lucinda Nolan (b1882 in Wollongong, NSW). Michael - a Miner - and Lucinda married in 1901 in Redfern, NSW. They settled in Mt Keira, Wollongong where Michael was a Miner and Mine Deputy.

Andrew started working as a Miner and in 1932 married Leah Richards (b1907 in Warwickshire, England). Leah - a Hat Trimmer - arrived in Sydney NSW  on board the Beltana with her parents ond one of her three siblings. The family moved to Kembla Heights in Wollongong, NSW. By 1937 Andrew was working as a Collector in Wollongong and enlisted in the Australian Army in February 1942. He was a Corporal (Service No:NX89197) attached to 30 Employment Coy when he was Discharged in December 1945.

Andrew and Leah remained in Wollongong, where Andrew worked as a Collector. He died in 1977 and Leah died in 2003.
