Corporal Anthony Maynard Braithwaite Cooper (Service No:NX22701) initially served in the Militia, enlisting on 1 September 1936 as a Sapper (later Sergeant; Service No:264193) attached to 8th Field Coy. Corporal Cooper enlisted in the AIF as a Private on 30 May 1940, and was a Corporal attached to 2/4 Field Coy when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Suez on 14 November 1940. Corporal Cooper served with 2/4 Field Coy at Mersuh Matra in Egypt and in Syria and Lebanon. WiA on 23 June 1941 - GSW to chest and arm - Corporal Cooper embarked from the Middle East for Sydney on 30 October 1941 on board Hospital Ship 2/2 (SS Wanganella), and was attached to 2/4 Field Coy at Discharge on 23 December 1942 (Medically Unfit).
Tony was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1918, third of five children of Albert (Jack) John Valentine Cooper (b1875 in Shanghai, China) and Nellie Mordaunt Moreton Clarke (b1882 in Sydney, New South Wales). Jack was a Merchant and Commission Agent of Japan when he and Nellie married in Sydney in 1913, and the couple lived in Japan, England and Sydney. In 1924 Jack and Nellie moved permanently to Sydney, arriving with their children on board the Barrabool. Jack worked as an Accountant in Sydney.
Tony was working as a Clerk in Sydney when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1946 in Sydney married Margaret Windeyer Gale (b1925 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Margaret was working in Sydney as a Stenographer. Tony and Margaret settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Tony worked as an Auctioneer and Clerk. Tony died in 2004 and Margaret in 2008.
