Son of William John Howes and Margaret Howes of Redmond Street, Leichhardt, NSW. 

On 22 May 1916 he attempted to enlisted but was found to be underage with his correct age being 16 years. 

Brother of William Henry Howes who was killed in action on 9 October 1917 while serving with the 17th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 17 of the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres; Arthur David Howes who returned to Australia on 30 March 1916 having served with the 7th Light Horse Regiment and Norman John Howes who returned to Australia on 10 February 1919 having served with the Camel Corps.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 May 1918 disembarking on 4 July 1918 at Melbourne for overland travel to Sydney

During 1936c Rupert married Ruth Emily Lollback in Sydney, NSW
