Ted was the son of Arthur and Wilmot Holmes, nee Smith. He grew up in Williamstown, South Australia, and after leaving there, worked on station properties in outback New South Wales and Queensland. He enlisted in the Light Horse, trained at Liverpool, New South Wales, and embarked for Egypt on the "Beltana", from Sydney on 9 November 1915. In Egypt he transfered to the 5th Division Artillery and went to France. In April 1918 he was transfered from 5th DAC to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to the 53rd Battery. He returned to Australia on the "Orontes" and was discharged on 18th August 1919 after serving 1442 days, including 1326 overseas.

On return he visited family in South Australia Ted once again headed to the station country of New South Wales and Queensland, where he worked on several properties. He did not marry and would occasionally visit family in South Australia. His last known address was Darlington Point, via Hay, New South Wales.
