Norman was the fourth of five children of Selby (Charles) Matthews (b1883 in Goulburn, NSW) and Kathleen (Kate) Emma Thomas (b1887 in Ipswich, QLD). Charles (a Carpenter) and Kate married in 1909 in Newcastle NSW where they lived until 1914 when the relocated to Wingham, near Taree in NSW. In 1916 Charles enlisted in the AIF (Lance Corporal; Service No:1174) and was severely gassed in 1917 - as a result of which he sufferred recurring ill health the rest of his life. The family lived in Wingham before moving to Sydney in the early 1930s.

Norman was a Carpenter in Sydney NSW when he enlisted in the Australian Army in January 1941. He served as a Sapper(Service No:NX67154) wth 2/14 Field Coy RAE in the Middle East (3 February 1941 - 30 March 1942) and as a Corporal in Darwin (1943) and New Guinea (10 August 1942 - 20 February 1944 and 3 November 1944 - 7 December 1945). Norman was Discharged in December 1945.

In 1945 Norman married Lucy Hillier Clarke (nee Langdon; b1918 in Rockdale NSW) - Lucy was a Hat Trimmer. The couple settled in Bondi where Norman worked as a Carpenter until his death in 1949. Lucy remarried and died in 2001.
