He was the son of Samuel Smith, of Wauchope, grandson of Joseph Laurie of Laurieton and great grandson of the Patriarch, Joseph Laurie of  Stobo, Scotland.

He is remembered in  the book of remembrance for Tweeddale. [Roll of honour of Peebleshire men killed in the Great War, 1914-1918. With portraits.]
