The eldest son and third of seven children, Malcolm was born in 1912 in Greenough, WA to Angus McLeod and Mabel Victoria Collins. Angus (b1876 in Warwick QLD) and Mabel (nee Bryans; b1879 in London England) married in 1910 in Coolgardie WA. Angus was a Labourer in Sand Springs, Greenough and Mabel had emigrated in 1907, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Oruba. Angus and Mabel lived in Greenough and Mt Magnet where Angus was a Labourer and Farm Manager, before retiring to Dongara in the 1940s, and then to Perth WA.

Malcolm worked in Mt Magnet WA as a Truck Driver before enlisting in the Australian Army in April 1940. He served as a Private/Sapper (Service No:WX2484) and was attached to 2/3 Field Coy when he was Discharged in October 1945. Brother Ian (Service No:W36558) also served in WWII.

In 1944 in Perth WA Malcolm married Jessie Eastlake (b1914 in Perth WA) - Jessie was a Machinist. Following his Discharge, Malcolm and Jessie lived in Kojonup WA where Malcolm was a Farm Hand before settling in South Stirlings via Mt Barker WA where Malcolm was a Farmer. Malcolm died in 1963 and Jessie in 1985.
