RUN DOWN BY TRAIN – RAILWAY FITTERS KILLED
Fatality at Footscray
Two men were killed in a railway fatality at Footscray on Saturday morning. The victims were: –
WILLIAM ENDACOTT, 32 years, married, Vincent-street, Coburg.
GEORGE VICTOR AYLOTT, 32 years, married, Inglis-street, Williamstown.
Both men, who were electrical fitters employed by the Railway department, were killed by the 8.30 a.m. Bendigo express after stepping from one line to another in order to avoid an approaching train from Kyneton. The men were walking along the “up” track at Footscray, under the Nicholson-street-bridge with the intention of repairing a defect in some automatic signals in the vicinity. Under the bridge they noticed the Kyneton train approaching. Stepping on to the “down” track they were struck by the Bendigo-bound train.
The accident was reported by the driver of the Kyneton train, but the Bendigo train crew was unaware of the accident until informed on the arrival of the train at Clarkefield.
Both Endacott and Aylott were attached to Footscray signal depot.
