Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

George was born at Warracknabeal, Victoria on 29.09.1895 to Johann Jack HALLETT (1854-1900) and Jane ROWLEY. (1860-1946). His mother already had children from a previous relationship.

From all accounts, it would seem that the HALLETT children did not have the best of upbringings and some/all of them ended up as state wards.

At the time of his enlistment, George was a farmer at Myponga.

George married Emma LEES at Norwood on 26.05.1923.

George died at Renmark on 14.03.1959 aged 63.

Military

George joined the AIF on 16 June 1915 and was allocated service number 1732. He was given permission to join the military in a letter signed by his mother.

He embarked on 11.01.1916 with the 2nd reinforcements of the 32nd Battalion to Egypt. He joined the 15th Battalion on 06.03.1916 arriving in France on 08.06.1916.

Pte HALLETT was reported as wounded in action at the battle of Pozieres on 09.08.1916 with shrapnel wounds. On 14.11.1916, he was advised as a prisoner of war (POW) and was interred at Dulman, Munster, and Friedrichsfeld POW camps, Germany.

Official notification of his status as a POW was sent to his mother on 05.12.1916.

At the end of the war, he was repatriated to England on 02.12.1918 and returned to Australia at the end of the war arriving on 18.04.1919

He has been officially discharged from the AIF on 13.07.1919.
