From Cowra to Kokoda
Cpl ALBERT EDWARD DURIE, from the Coal Fields area in the NSW Hunter Valley, enlisted in the Second AIF (1939-1945) on December 29 1941 and discharged on April 5 1946. (NB: Japan entered the war in December 1941.)
From the Infantry Training Battalions at Cowra, New South Wales, the forces were engaged in the "South West Pacific Theatre". With other Australian Troops, Cpl Albert Durie was engaged in land battles in Papua New Guinea.
Cpl Albert Durie's years of war service were rarely a topic of conversation. Some exceptions being the harsh conditions in the tropical climate, mate-ship references to the "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels", a term which the Australians gave to the caring Papuan New Guinea villagers who rendered assistance during the Kokoda Track campaign.
Prior to his discharge, Cpl Albert Durie married Ruth (Fallon) Chadwick on February 5 1946.
