Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Youngest of three brothers (Michael and Paul) who served in WWII, Private/Sapper Peter Waterhouse Smith (Service No:V34476) served in the ACMF with 10 Field Coy RAE from 21 August 1940 to 1 May 1942 (Medically Unfit).

Peter was born in Yorkshire, England in 1920, youngest of four children of Harold Waterhouse Smilth (b1878 in Yorkshire, England) and Elizabeth Enwright (b1886 in Dublin, Ireland). Harold was a Baker in 1912 when he and Elizabeth married in Brighouse, Yorkshire. In 1922 the couple immigrated with their four children, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Balranald, and settling in Victoria - Swan Hill and St Kilda. Harold worked as a Baker and Bakery Shop Owner.

Peter was working as a Pastry Cook for Smith's Cakes St Kilda in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, he worked at the Bakery in St Kilda with his father, and in 1949 in Melbourne married Marjorie Ann Waldron (b1916 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales). By the 1970s, Peter was living in Cringila in Wollongong with his son, and working as a Labourer. Peter died in 1981 and Marjorie in 1990.
