Sapper Neil Henry Richardson (Service No:NX78701) enlisted in the AIF on 15 December 1941 at Recruiting Depot Paddington. Attached to 8th Infantry Training Battalion, Sapper Richardson was hospitalised with Appendicitis and Influenza before embarking from Dubbo NSW for the Suez with 31st Infantry Training Battalion on 23 August 1942. Sapper Richardson was attached to 2/2nd Machine Gun Battalion when he embarked from the Middle East for Sydney on 27 February 1943. Transferred to 2/24th Field Park Coy RAE on 7 July 1943, Sapper Richardson (graded as Miner) served in New Guinea (20 August 1943 - 21 March 1944) and Morotai (17 May 1945 - 21 January 1946). Sapper Richardson was attached to 2/24th Field Park Coy RAE at Discharge on 26 February 1946.
Neil was born at Woods Point, Victoria in 1909, ninth of ten children of Thomas Richardson (b1861 in Rushworth, Victoria) and Catherine Carldina Marcapolo (b1871 at Jordan, Victoria). Thomas was a Blacksmith when he and Catherine married in 1891 in Aberfeldy, where they settled and raised their family and Thomas worked as a Blacksmith. Following Catherine's death in 1914, Thomas moved to Morwell where he worked as a Blacksmith and Labourer.
Neil worked in Melbourne as a Labourer before moving to Sydney, NSW where he was a Labourer when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Neil was in Sydney working as a Labourer in 1947 when he married Eileen Catherine Hawkins (nee Thompson; b1908 in Sydney, NSW) - Eileen worked as a Typist. Neil and Eileen settled in Sydney where they raised their family and Neil worked as a Labourer and Eileen as a Stenographer. Following Eileen's death in 1990, Neil moved to Tenambit in Maitland where he died in 1997.
