Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Ernest was the second of six children of George Fernley (b1878 in London, England) and Alice Marjorie Foster (b1881 in Herfordshire, England). George (a Factory Labourer) and Alice married in London in 1905 and settled in London where George was a Stevedore/Waterside Worker. George died in 1916 and in June 1923 Alice emigrated with her children, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Benalla. By 1924 Alice had remarried in Katanning WA to Alexander May - a Farmer in Wagin.

Ernest worked in Perth, WA as a Builder's Labourer and in 1933 married Catherine Meldrum (nee Williams; b1902 in the Murchison, WA). Ernest enlisted in the ACMF in March 1942 (Sapper; Service No:W54930) and Discharged in December 1942 to enlist in the AIF (Sapper; Service No:WX36132). He served with 2/9 Field Coy in Borneo (23 June 1945 - 19 December 1945) and was Discharged in January 1946. Brother John Leonard (WX11381) and Step Daughter Leslie Jean Meldrum (WF91343) also served in WWII.

Back in Perth WA, Ernest and Catherine settled in Perth (Rivervale) WA where Ernest worked as a Labourer. Catherine died in 1981.
