Sapper Harold Lacco (Service No:VX37565) enlisted in the AIF on 16 July 1940 and was attached to RRD Royal Park and 2/2 Pioneer Training Battalion. Initially graded as Carpenter, in 1942 he was graded as Engine Artificer. Sapper Lacco served with 2/9th Field Regiment in the Middle East (28 June 1941 - 31 March 1942), New Guinea (26 May 1943 - 4 June 1944) and Borneo (23 May 1945 - 22 November 1945). Sapper Lacco was attached to 2/9 Field Regiment at Discharge on 6 December 1945.
Born in Queenscliff, Victoria in 1917, Harold was fourth of six children of Patrick (Mitch) Mitchell Lacco (b1883 in McCrae, Mornington Peninsula,Victoria) and Lucy Mary Wickham (b1884 in Ipswich, QLD). Mitch, who descended from a lighthouse crew family, was a Boat Builder when he and Lucy married in 1907 in Melton, Victoria. Mitch and Lucy lived in Rosebud before settling in Queenscliff in 1916, and returning to Rosebud in the 1920s. Following Lucy's death in 1947, Mitch remarried in 1954 to Beatrice Victoria Hannah Anderson (nee Munyard; b1887 in Melbourne, Victoria). Mitch and his family were Boat Builders, Sail Makers and Fishermen.
Harold was working in Rosebud as a Shipwright and Boatman when he enlisted in the Army in 1940. In 1942 in Hamilton, Victoria he married Eileen May Miller Dean (b1912 in Hamilton, Victoria) and following his Discharge, he and Eileen settled in Rosebud, Dromana where they raised their family and Harold was a Boat Builder and Fisherman. Harold died in 1998 and Eileen in 2002.
