Joseph James Pashley
Service No: 2977
Rank: Private
Unit: 49th Infantry Battalion
A few weeks ago, we noticed that the grave of Private Joseph James Pashley and his wife, Florence was in need of some TLC, so today we headed over to Nundah Cemetery to attend to their grave. We received permission from their granddaughter, Kerry as well as the Brisbane City Council before undertaking this work. Kerry and her brother have visited the battlefields in France and Belgium where they went on a guided tour to see all the locations that Joseph served during WW1.

Joseph James Pashley was born in Bundaberg, Queensland on the 25th April 1897 to parents Agnes Boyd and Thomas Joseph Pashley. Joseph was the second eldest of six children and had three sisters and two brothers.
On the 5th September 1916, at the age of 19 years, Joseph enlisted for service in Bundaberg. He embarked at Brisbane aboard A74 “Marathon” on the 27th October and disembarked in Plymouth, England on the 9th January the following year where he joined the 13th Training Battalion. Joseph proceeded overseas to France, via Folkstone, in July where he joined the 49th Battalion.
On the 5th of April 1918, Joseph was wounded in Action whilst serving in Etaples, France. He received a gunshot wound to his right arm which fractured his humerous. He was admitted to hospital in France before embarking on HS “Princess Elizabeth” for England on the 14th April. The following day, Joseph arrived in England where he was admitted to Cambridge Hospital in Aldershot, for treatment. He spent the next four months in Cambridge Hospital before being transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford.
Joseph was discharged from hospital on the 13th of December and was returned to Australia per HT “Takada” embarking on 25th December 1918 and was discharged on 29th August 1920. On his return to Australia, Joseph worked as a labourer in Brisbane and Fraser Island before returning to his hometown of Bundaberg.
In 1922, Joseph married Florence Pleasant Olsen in Bundaberg and the couple lived in the Pashley family home in Stewart Street, Bundaberg with Joseph’s parents. Joseph and Florence lived in the Stewart Street home for a number of years before relocating to the Brisbane suburb of Pinkenba in the early-mid 1930’s. The couple had four children – 2 sons and 2 daughters – but sadly, one of their sons died before the age of 1.
Joseph James Pashley passed away at the grand age of 91 years on the 12th July 1988. He was buried at Nundah Cemetery with his wife, Florence who predeceased him by 39 years and 11 months.
