Youngest son of Charles Meredith and Alice Mildred Hall, he was educated at Sacred Heart College, Seymour (now St Mary’s College), before later attending Melbourne Grammar School.
Upon returning to Melbourne, he and his partner, John Holdsworth, established and operated a highly successful florist shop at 27 Toorak Road, South Yarra. Renowned for its quality and elegance, the business became well regarded within Melbourne society and provided floral arrangements for many prominent homes and occasions, including Government House
