He enlisted in the ACMF on 31 October 1941 and was 'in the field' with 4 Field Coy when he enlisted in the AIF on 4 August 1942. Private Carlton served with 4 Field Coy in New Guinea (21 February 1943 - 16 August 1944), Lae (2 July 1944 - 9 September 1944) and Jacquinot Bay (21 February 1945 - 1 November 1945), and was Discharged on 20 December 1945. Siblings John, David and William also served in WWII.

David worked at Mt Egerton and Mt Magnet WA as a Miner, and in Melbourne as a Labourer, Carter and Driver before serving briefly in the AIF in 1916 (Private; Service No:2627 - Discharged medically unfit with fractured foot). He and Elsie (a Divorcee with two young children) married in 1918 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family, and David worked as a Labourer until his death in 1945.
George worked in Melbourne as a Labourer with the Orderly Division of the Melbourne City Council before enlisting in the Army. In 1942 in Melbourne he married Joyce Melinda Maddigan (b1922 in Melbourne, Victoria) and, following his Discharge, George and Joyce settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and George worked as a Labourer with Melbourne City Council and, from the early 1950s, as a Tile Maker.
