Eldest of the three brothers (Arthur, Wylie and Cliff) who served in WWII; Lance Corporal Arthur Leonard Conroy (Service No:VX35164) enlisted in the AIF on 15 July 1940 as a Private with the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) - Nursing Orderly. Lance Corporal Conroy was attached to 2/9 Field Ambulance on 2 February 1942 when he embarked from Sydney for Singapore, and was reported Missing on 26 March 1942. Confirmed a PoW held by the Japanese on 9 June 1943, Lance Corporal Conroy was recovered at Changi Prison Camp on 8 September 1945, embarking from Singapore for Sydney on 21 September 1945 on board the Largs Bay. Lance Corporal Conroy was attached to 2/9 Field Ambulance at Discharge on 18 January 1946.

Arthur was born in Ararat, Victoria in 1913, third of seven children of Arthur John Conroy (b1886 at Mokepilly Station via Stawell, Victoria) and Adeline (Ada) May Hon (b1886 in Stawell, Victoria). Arthur Snr and Ada married in 1906 in Ararat, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur Snr was an Attendant at the Mental Asylum.

Arthur worked as a Labourer and Mental Hospital Attendant in Ararat before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, he returned to Ararat and worked as an Apiarist, and in 1950 married Jean Roberta Fisher (b1929 in Sunbury, Victoria). Arthur and Jean lived in Ararat, where they raised their family and Arthur was an Apiarist until the early 1960s. Arthur and Jean then settled in Ballarat, where Arthur was a Male Nurse at the Mental Hospital Wendourie until retirement.  Arthur died in 1982 and Jean died in 2015.
