Dave was the youngest of three children of Edward Argentine Hornsby (b1887 in Lillimur, Victoria) and Ada Mary Elizabeth Scott (b1893 in Melbourne, Victoria). Edward (a Farmer in Wongan Hills, WA) and Ada married in in Boyanup, WA in 1912. Dave was two months of age when his father died in 1916. Ada remarried in 1922.

Dave worked as a Labourer in Boyanup, WA and in August 1940 enlisted in the Australian Army. He served in the Middle East (March to June 1941) as a Private (Service No:WX7615) and was attached to 2/13 Field Ambulance Corps 8 Division when he was (Medical) Discharged in December 1943.

Dave was a Labourer in Boyanup in 1949 when he married Fay Scott (nee Herbert; b1921 in Perth, WA) in Perth WA. Dave and Fay settled in Boyanup where Dave worked as a Labourer and Boiler Attendant. He died in 1981 and Fay in 1994.
