Biography contributed by Darcy Maddock

AWM Roll of Honour (www.awm.gov.au) lists date of death as 01 Sep 1920 which is clearly an error when you read his funeral notice from 1930 on TROVE (trove.nla.gov.au) and see he died on 01 Sep 1930 well outside the date range for Roll of Honour inclusion.

In response to a querie the AWM Honour Roll assistant curator advised;

"Information relating to John Richard Sells’ death was provided to the Memorial by the Repatriation Department at the time of compiling the Roll of Honour in the 1940s. I have researched John Richard Sells’ death and established that his date of death is 1 September 1930, and have amended his Roll of Honour database record to reflect this date. It is a longstanding Memorial policy not to remove names from the Roll of Honour bronze panels in cases such as these. However, we will annotate our records for future reference, to note that his name was added to the Roll of Honour in error."

Son of Thomas James Joseph Sells and Margaret Jane Gowdy
