Harold James Carrick was born on the 9th of July 1890 in St Kilda, Victoria. Harold grew up with his parents, Lilian Robinson, who was also Harold’s next of kin at the time of enlistment into war, and his father, Robert Henry Carrick, who had worked as a chemist. At some stage the family moved to Houghton in South Australia. Before enlisting in the war, Harold's occupation was a draughtsman.
Harold enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on the 9th of September 1915, at 25 years and 2 months. Harold was examined for any potential conditions or illnesses that would affect his ability to fight. He was cleared of this, confirmed by the Examining Medical Officer. Harold was described as 5’4 ¾, weighed 146 lbs (66.2kg), chest measurement of 33.36 inches, complexion being fair, eyes presented as hazel, and hair described as fair (shades of blonde).
After enlisting in the war, Harold received service number 5701 and the rank of Sapper. He was assigned to the 3rd Field Company Engineers unit.
After completing their training period, the 3rd Field Company Engineers embarked from Alexandria to France 13th June 1916.
In May 1916 Harold was appointed Lance Corporal. A few months later, on the 25th of September 1917, Harold was appointed Temporary Corporal. On the 3rd of October 1917, Harold was promoted to the rank of 2nd Corporal.
Harold became sick in Egypt during March 1916 and spent time in hospital. Later that year in France Harold was admitted with an injured Hernia to 26 General Hospital on the 20 August 1916. He was sent to England for treatment and rest and then was granted furlough. He spent several months at the No. 1 Command Depot. He returned to France in May 1918.
Harold James Carrick married while serving on the Western Front. His marriage was reported to have been legalised on February 19 1917, to Violet Francis Harriet Bunn. Their daughter Violet Lillias Carrick was born in 1918.
Harold and his wife and child returned to Australia on the Dunvegan Castle and disembarked 21st August 1919. He was discharged 19 October 1919.
In 1931 the family returned to live in the UK at Lincolnshire.
Harold James Carrick passed away on the 23rd of October 1941 at age 51. His place of death was in Cleethorpes, Northeast Lincolnshire Unitary Authority, Lincolnshire, England. His grave lies at Scartho Road Cemetary in Grimsby, Northeast Lincolnshire Unitary Authority, Lincolnshire, England.
