Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Lance Corporal Archibald Frederick Paine (Service No:WX6383) served in the Army from 16 July 1940 to 12 March 1941 (discharged Medically Unfit) with 2/6 Field Park Coy 8 Division.

Archie was born in Jubbulpore, India in 1906, fourth of twelve children of Horace Richard Paine (b1866 in Sussex, England) and his second wife Alethea Adelaide Willard (b1881 in Tamil Nadu, India). Richard (a British Soldier) and Alethea married in 1901 in Jubbulpore and lived in India - Richard was Staff Sergeant (Farrier: Regimental No:68493) attached to Royal Field Artilliery 12th Ammunition Column (1888 to 1912). Following his Discharge in 1912, the family lived in Bombay, where Richard was a Transport Officer in 1918, and in Iraq, where Richard was an employee of the Anglo Persian Oil Coy in 1919. Richard and Alethea immigrated in 1925, arriving in Fremantle WA from Basrah with four children on board the Khyber. Richard and Alethea moved to Lilyvale via Busselton, where Richard worked as a Fettler, then to Perth in the late 1920s where Richard worked as a Caretaker. By 1934 Richard and Alethea had settled in Melbourne.

Archie worked as a Fitter in Mesopatamia before immigrating to Western Australia in 1924, arriving in Fremantle from Colombo with two of his sisters on board the Maloja. Archie worked in Denmark at the Railway Construction Camp as a Labourer before moving to Perth in the early 1930s, where he worked as a Canvasser. In 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, Archie had been working in Norseman as a Miner, and following his Discharge, moved to Melbourne where he lived with his parents and worked as a Fitter. In the mid 1960s, Archie moved to Tasmania, and was living at Mole Creek in 1966 when he married Pamela Ruby Howe (b1938 in Launceston, Tasmania). Archie died in 1985.
