At the time of enlistment he was residing at Townsville, QLD.

Son of Edward James Uren and Mary Elizabeth Uren nee Robins of Melville Street, Charters Towers, QLD.

4 October 1915 - enlisted at Townsville, QLD, with the 41st Battalion with the rank of Private.

17 December 1915 - promoted to Corporal

25 February 1916 - promoted to Sergeant

24 December 1916 - wounded in action. Multiple wounds. Invalided to England on 11 January 1917

4 May 1917 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Miltiades disembarking on 4 July 1917 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal 

21 August 1917 - discharged at the 1st Military District as medically unfit due to wounding.

On 1 January 1919 - Herbert married Lilian Grace Johnston in QLD.
