Served in The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

54 years ago today, on the 21st June 1966, Private Leslie James Hughes, 34th Battalion, labourer (B.H.P. Steelworks), from Little Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 26 Union Street, Wickham, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. ANGLICAN 3-218. 17.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 1st October 1895 to George Edward and Amy Selina Hughes, Leslie enlisted August 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W., but was discharged at father's request, 19.11.1915.

Reenlisted-8.5.1916, Broadmeadow, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (exhaustion, 1st Battle of Passchendaele - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138735020), 25.11.1917 (GSW left foot - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138745421), Leslie returned home August 1919 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article162560496, discharged September 1919.

Mr Hughes has been remembered for his service on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates (photo) and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Sadly, Leslie had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so March 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
