The late Mr Robert John Heron, who died at the Thyne Memorial hospital, Millicent, on February 28, was born at Wilmington in July, 1883. He was one of the nine children of the late Mr and Mrs John Heron, and five sisters and two brothers are living. He enlisted for active service in February, 1915, and was wounded in France in 1916. Invalided home, he was appointed recruiting organiser for the South East, with headquarters at Naracoorte, remaining there until his discharge when the first world war ended in 1918. Prior to the  war, Mr Heron had filled executive positions with leading timber firms at Port Adelaide, and he received an appointment as one of the first managers at the original sawmill at  Mount Burr. He held several responsible positions with the woods and forests department in the South East, and at one period he was in charge of part of the investigations into  the wood pulp industry. Later he was appointed superintendent of the youth forestry camp at Mount Burr. Subsequently he was in the employ of Cellulose Australia Limited. In his  earlier years Mr Heron was a tennis enthusiast, and was chosen for interstate play. He was an active member of the Millicent sub-branch of the returned soldiers' league. He  married Miss Ina Varcoe, a daughter of Mr and Mrs John Varcoe, of Millicent, and leaves a widow and a family of three children—Betty (Mrs R. Anderson, Naracoorte), Pat (Mrs E.  Croser, Millicent), and John (Education department, Adelaide).
