William was the third of six children of Victor Emmanuel Salter (b1864 in Sydney, NSW) and his second wife Constance (Teeny) Hastedt (b1887 in Adelong NSW). Victor - a Labourer - and Teeny married in 1902 in Sydney NSW and the next year moved to New Zealand where they lived until 1908.
William lived with his parents in Sydney NSW and worked as a Dyer and Labourer before enlisting in the Australian Army in June 1940. He was a Bombardier (Service No:NX27557) attached to 2/6 Field Regiment when he was Discharged in October 1946.
Returning to Sydney NSW, William lived with his mother Teeny following his father's death, and was a Manager in 1958 when he married Margaret Scott Bertram (b1904 in Sydney, NSW) - Margaret was a Clerk. William died in 1964 and Margaret in 1983.
