It was a beautiful winter’s day at Lutwyche Cemetery when our volunteers restored the lettering to the headstone of Daniel Thomas Price and his wife, Frances. The headstone was in good condition, although a bit dull from being out in the elements for over 60 years. We are grateful to have received family permission to undertake these works, as well as approval and support from Brisbane City Council. The grave surrounds were also given a gentle clean to remove all the dirt and grime that has built up. The grave now looks tidy and the headstone is able to be easily read.
𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 was born on 5 January 1891 in the Queensland town of Warwick, to parents Ellen Conway and Mortimer (Murty) Price. He was the fifth of seven children, and had four brothers and two sisters. The family lived at the Lyndhurst Stud Farm, where Daniel’s father Murty managed the farming side of the well-known property, and was an expert in many avenues of farm life, renowned as a stack builder. Murty was employed at the property for over 50 years and was an employee until his death in 1941.
Daniel enlisted to serve with the Australian Imperial Force on 1 September 1915, signing up at Enoggera, Brisbane. He embarked at Sydney per HMAT ‘Borda’ on 5 June 1916, disembarking at Southampton in England on 23 July 1916.
After four months in England, Daniel proceeded overseas to France, embarking on 25 November with the 42nd Battalion. He was admitted to hospital on 17 January 1917 with mumps, and was transferred to the 7th General Hospital for treatment before being discharged on 7 February. He rejoined his unit in the field four days later.

Daniel was transferred from 42nd Battalion on 31 October, and taken on strength of the 11th Brigade Headquarters the following day. He was granted leave to England the following year on 27 February 1918, rejoining his unit from leave on 15 March. He was transferred to another unit three months later, being taken on strength of the 41st Battalion from the 11th Brigade Headquarters. Daniel was granted leave on 30 December 1918, returning to France from England on 15 January 1919.
Daniel marched out to Base from the field on 10 May 1919, embarking for return to Codford, England nine days later. He returned to Australia per HT ‘Prinz Hubertus’, disembarking in Australia on 26 September and was discharged from service on 13 October 1919.
On his return to Australia, Daniel worked as a cook in Coolangatta. He married Frances Ruby Beard on 7 July 1926, and the couple had three sons – George Daniel, Gregory Thomas and Ronald Arthur. Daniel and Frances lived in the Toowoomba region from 1930 to 1937 where Daniel was employed as a gardener, before moving to Green’s Orchard at North Tamborine sometime around 1943. Frances left Green’s Orchard in 1954, moving to live with her son George at Gympie Road, Aspley. Daniel stayed on at Green’s Orchard, and worked as a gardener there until 1958, when he moved to his son Gregory’s house at 9 Navua Avenue, Aspley where Frances was also living at the time.
Daniel Thomas Price passed away the following year on 12 March 1959 at the age of 68 years, and was buried at Lutwyche Cemetery two days later. His wife, Frances died sixteen years later on 1 October 1975, and was buried with Daniel.
