Douglas Morden Pinnington
My father Douglas (Baldy) Pinnington was a member of the Australian Light Horse (Boggabri Troop) before the outbreak of World War 2, as he was working on a property in the area at the time. The Troopers found out that there would be no role for the Light Horse in any new conflict and that they would be deployed into Cavalry Units, which meant Tanks. Dad didn't like the idea of conducting a war "in tine can" and decided he would enlist elsewhere. The Army were looking for men to go into Artillery units who had experience with horses, as it was thought that horse drawn artillery would play a part in the new conflict as they had done in the First World War.
His twin brother Laidley (Bag) Pinnington had already joined the 2/6th Field Regiment which made it an easy decision for my dad to also join the 2/26th, a decision that would shape his life and bring him into contact with men who would become his lifelong mates.
