Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Harry Bolton Humphreys was the son of George Bolton Humphreys and Laura Humphreys, of Eastwood, New South Wales.

Harry was born in Wollongong, and was only 19 years of age when he died. His father’s address was in South Africa when Harry enlisted, and on his roll of honour form his father stated that Harry had attended High School in Boksburg, Transvaal, South Africa. He also stated Harry was an apprentice engineer in Haberfield, Sydney prior to the war.

Harry’s older brother, Lieutenant Robert George Humphreys, M.M., also of the 1st Battalion AIF, was killed in action on 16 April 1918, aged 29.

The father, George Bolton Humphries, was an Englishman who had lived in Wollongong, NSW from 1883 and was also serving on an armoured train on during the Boer War on 15 November 1899 with the Durban Light Infantry when he was shot through both legs. He too was among the group of about 50 who were taken prisoner with Winston Churchill, and was most fortunate to have survived his wounds.

Harry Bolton Humphreys died during the 1st Battalion’s famous capture of Pozieres village on 23 July 1916, and he has no known grave.
