John was the eldest of five children of John Robert Shepley (b1874 in Lancashire, England) and Jessica (Jessie) Charlotte Mogg (b1878 in Brisbane, QLD). John Snr immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1889, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Orient. John Snr (a Miner) and Jessie married in 1900 in New Lambton, NSW where they  settled and raised their family until Jessie's death in 1912. John Snr worked as a Miner at Kalibah and a Labourer in Sydney NSW.

John worked as a Miner in Lithgow, NSW, and in July 1940 enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Gunner(Service No:NX57861) attached to 1 Field Training Regiment when he was Discharged in July 1941.

In 1942 John was an Iron Worker in Ipswich, QLD when he married Lily Violet Guard (b1908 in Ipswich, QLD) - Lily was a Tailoress. John and Lily settled in Booval, Ipswich where John worked as a Labourer and Railways Employee. John died in 1970 and Lily is 1999.
