Gunner Raymond Arthur Victor Coles (Service No:W233723) enlisted in the ACMF on 29 April 1940 and served in Darwin, NT (8 May 1940 - 16 March 1941) with Heavy Artillery. On 15 July 1942 Gunner Coles enlisted in the AIF (Service No:WX28782) and served in New Guinea (18 September 1942 - 12 April 1944) and SWPA (9 June 1945 - 23 August 1945). Gunner Coles was attached to 2/6 Field Regiment when he was Discharged on 29 October 1945.
Born in 1920 in Yorkshire England, Raymond was the third of eight children of Sydney Thomas Coles (b1889 in Birmingham, Warwickshire) and Florence Revell (b1895 in Hull, Yorkshire). Sydney (a Soldier) and Florence married in 1915 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire and lived in England and India where Sydney was a Gunner with the Royal Field Artillery (Regimental No:13462) - Sydney also served in France in WWI. Sydney and the family was in Calcutta, India in 1927 when they immigrated, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Shirala. The family initially settled in Denmark WA where Sydney was a Settler, before moving to Albany WA where Sydney worked as a Clerk.
Raymond worked as a Labourer and Grocer's Assistant in Albany WA prior to serving in WWII. Following his Discharge, Raymond returned to Albany WA where he worked as a Storeman. Raymond died in 1980.
