Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Leonard Keith Plain (Service No:VX11816) served in the Militia (Private; Service No:46261) with 4th Ordnance Store Coy AAOC from 19 April 1932 to 11 October 1938. He then served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:299966) as a Private attached to 5th Battalion from 24 January 1939 to 26 March 1940, enlisting in the AIF the next day. Private Plain served with 2/1 Machine Gun Battalion, embarking from Sydney for Gourock, Scotland on 8 May 1940 and from Scotland to Palestine on 4 November 1940. In 1941 he saw service in Greece, before embarking from the Middle East for Melbourne on 1 March 1943. Private Plain served on Thursday Island in May/July 1945 with 4 Australian Vehicle Park Workshop, and was attached to 2/7 Field Regiment (Jungle Division) as a Gunner at Discharge on 8 September 1945.

Keith was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, fifth of eight children of William John Plain (b1890 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elsie Phelan (b1892 in Melbourne, Victoria). William (a Grocer) and Elsie married in 1912 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family - William was Grocer until the 1920s, then a Tram Conductorr.

Keith worked as a Malteser's Labourer in Melbourne where, in 1944, he married Eileen Doris Evans (b1920 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Eileen was working in Melbourne as a Warper. Following his Discharge, Keith and Eileen are believed to have lived in Adelaide, South Australia in the 1950s, returning to Victoria in the early 1960s, where Keith was a Penal Officer in Beechworth. Keith died in 1972 and, following his death, Eileen worked as a Nursing Attendant until her death in 1981.
