Son of Robert Gilchrist and Marian Hardie Gilchrist nee Allan of South Melbourne, Victoria.

Brother of Harold Gilchrist who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 6th Batalion and has no known grave. His name appeaars on Menin Gate, Ypres;  Robert Bruce Gilchrist who returned to Australia on 8 September 1918 having served with the 58th Battalionn; Arthur Alan Gilchrist of the 16th General (Victorian) Reinforcements but his ship was recalled due to the cessation of hostilities

Husband of Elizabeth Ann Gilchrist nee Robertson of 35 Hutchesson Street, Moonee Ponds, Victoria. Andrew and Elizabeth were married during 1916 in Victoria. Elizabeth later died in Wagga Wagga, NSW during 1932.

Husband of Jessie Emma Gilchrist nee Mann. Andrew and Jessie married in 1938 in Wagga Wagga, NSW
